The kiln change technique of creating a mix of colors became popular in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912) in the late 17th century, and requires high temperatures of over 1200°C (2190°F). The potters will paint on thick layers of different colors of glaze. Then, they will repeatedly adjust the temperature of the kiln higher and lower to allow the glaze to slightly mix and drip. Due to the unpredictable nature of the way the glaze develops in the kiln, appearance is variable, and some pieces appear more blue while others are more yellow.
