An ornately patterned enamel green gaiwan made in historic Jingdezhen. Enamel is made by painting different mineral pigments in detailed patterns onto the porcelain’s surface and then covering it with glaze. This gaiwan’s intricate patterns of lotus flowers and twining branches take meticulous skilled workmanship to create. In genuine enamel porcelain, you can feel the texture of each hand-painted detail. Capacity 200mL.

This highly challenging style is relatively new and was created during the reign of Emperor Kangxi in the Qing Dynasty after 1680. Prior to this, intricately painted porcelain was done in the simple traditional blue and white style, like in our Blue and White Fish Gaiwan or Blue Flower Porcelain Tea Caddy. However, the emperor loved the work of an oil painter who was a European missionary to China. This enamel style was inspired by those highly colorful designs.
