The elegant design of this Yi Shou Longevity zi ni yixing clay pot is an artistic celebration of Zen Buddhist philosophy. The poem on the side evokes the calming spirit of chang xin (Zen heart), acknowledging the inevitably changing and circular nature of life. As the pot becomes seasoned with use, the carved characters of the poem will retain tea stains and become more pronounced. The name yi (good, benefit) shou (longevity) wishes good health and long life to the tea drinker. The turtle-shaped handle on the lid ties into this concept with reference to the longevity turtle from Chinese legend. Shaped like dragon’s head, the tea pot’s long straight spout gives good control of the pour of tea from the dragon’s mouth. This pot also features a raised strainer bulb behind the spout. This prevents leaves from falling out of the pot without impeding the flow of water.
This yixing pot has two highly unusual design features. Instead of the usual placement of the vent hole in the lid, the hole is set into the top of the handle near the pot’s body. In addition, rather than the usual open domed lid design, the interior of the lid is sealed off. This creates a smooth, flat inner surface and a lid with a hollow cavity inside. Seated slightly above the pot’s body, the lid fits snugly into the pot’s mouth.
Made from purple zi ni yixing clay, this pot’s simple dark color lets the artistry of the design shine. It would make an excellent tea set paired with our Zi Ni purple yixing clay cups or purple yixing saucer.
Like all of our yixing clay products, this pot is unglazed. The natural clay remains its original color. Yixing clay absorbs aromas easily, so just rinse it off with boiling water instead of washing with soap.
