Golden rims and the the subtly raised line-drawing of an orchid adorn the exterior of this piece, but perhaps its most striking quality is the calming purity of its porcelain’s color: a pale and misty cyan, nearly white, like fog above lake water in the very first light of day.

This style of porcelain is known as Yingqing (影青) porcelain, also called Qingbai (青白) porcelain. It was invented in Jingdezhen, the famous porcelain capital, in the Song Dynasty.
