A large personal teacup in pale blue-green celadon. A detailed design of a traditional shanshui “mountains and waters” scene wraps around both the outside and inside of the cup in a rich ink blue color.

This style of Yingqing (影青) “shadow celadon” or Ying celadon was originally made by the famous porcelain artists of Jingdezhen City in the middle Northern Song Dynasty. It is characterized by its translucent blue-white glaze over white porcelain, which creates a shadowed visual effect. The surface of the thick glaze is slick, soft and utterly smooth in a fashion reminiscent of polished jade stone, so much so that it has historically often been referred to as “false jade.”

This cup is larger than ordinary Chinese tea tasting cups, in a style known as “personal cup” — a cup with an ample capacity befitting long and contemplative tea drinking by oneself.
