Guafengzhai (Windswept Village)

Sheng Puer Cake 200g 2023

A woody, bright and complex sheng puer from the highest village in Yiwu Mountain, with a sweet aroma as airy as a mountaintop breeze. Its initial slight astringency develops into pronounced returning sweetness and a lingering, coating flavor with notes of applewood. An excellent display of the signature soft and velvety character of Yiwu tea due to the maturity of its old-growth forest tea trees.

Guafengzhai is the village on the highest peak of renowned Yiwushan (Yiwu Mountain), the second tallest peak in all of Xishuangbanna. At this high altitude, ranging from 1,200 to 1,700 meters, the surrounding mountains and streams are constantly swept by the wind, earning the village its name. The mountain climate at this height experiences large differences in temperature between day and night, so the tea trees produce extra antioxidants and amino acids to weather the changes. This translates to a more complex flavor in tea.

Guafengzhai’s tea groves of mature trees are found deep within their natural forest habitat, 20 kilometers away from the village and human influence. Although it produces the smallest volume of tea of the seven villages of Yiwu, Guafengzhai has the best-preserved resources of old-growth tea trees. Most of the mature tea trees here are allowed to grow naturally rather than pruned small, and they are left undisturbed in their original forest environment. As a result, they can reach a height of several meters, and tea pickers need to climb into the branches to harvest the tea.
