This large ceramic teacup has a gradient of warm white speckling that fades into the deep brown base color toward the foot of the cup. This gradually fading “kiln change” effect is created by changing the temperature of the kiln during firing, in order to adjust the rate at which different glazes slowly drip down the sides from top to bottom.

This teacup forms a matching set with the Jun Kiln Brown Kiln Change Teapot, sold separately.

Song Dynasty Yao Bian Kiln Change Glaze Ceramics

This Yao Bian “kiln change” style was popular in the Song Dynasty (960–1279). This technique requires a high level of ceramic-making skill, since the artist is actively changing the temperature of the kiln during the delicate firing process to achieve this effect.

While there are multiple ceramic styles that utilize this technique of creating glaze gradients, the Yao Bian style teaware originally from Jun Kiln is typically very dark in color. It was originally popular as a style for matcha bowls, and the dark glaze highlighted the light green matcha froth.
