Set against the warm white suet jade background is a soft nighttime scene of grey and red rabbits underneath the full golden moon and a persimmon tree. In Chinese legend, sweet rabbits like these are the only animals that live on the moon. As such, they are the only companions to the princess Chang’e who lives there alone, and are a sign of comfort, peace, and hope.

The persimmon shi (柿) is often a visual pun on the phrase shi shi ru yi (柿柿如意), expressing a desire for all your wishes to come true.
