Classic Da Hong Pao (Big Red Robe)
Rock Wulong Tea 2025
A throwback edition of Da Hong Pao that’s a testament to the skill of the roast. This compelling combination of wood and sweetness evokes aromatics of palo santo and blackberry crumble, with a coating flavor that is minimally sharp despite its dark roast. This is truly old-school Classic Da Hong Pao (Big Red Robe) for easy drinking.

This tea’s mellow depth and darkness will draw in rock wulong lovers for something special. This version of Da Hong Pao bears all the hallmarks of the teas crafted by tea maker Mr. Liu Dexi (our producer of wulong staples like Shuixian and Eight Immortals for many years). This tea has a notably smooth front and soft, rich body, with rock wulong’s classic woody notes balanced by delectable sweetness. Despite its darkness, its roast never gives in to sharpness, remaining utterly soft and comforting. We found it particularly enjoyable drunk in the old-school fashion: simply brewed “grandpa-style” in a tall glass, occasionally topping it off with water, letting all its layered flavors mix and intermingle for the fullest possible experience.
Liu Dexi is a fifth generation tea maker born in 1967 to an old tea family. He began making tea himself in 1993 and eventually became one of the first students of Liu Guoying. The two men are today friends and frequent collaborators, but Dexi humbly pays honor to Liu Guoying as his teacher. In 2015, Mr. Liu Dexi was awarded the title Representative Inheritor of a Traditional Craft for Wuyi Yancha, this is a prestigious award, making him one of only 16 people in all of Wuyishan to receive this recognition.
Liu Dexi speaks few words, but if you ask him about his tea then the depth and passion in his answers betray his mastery. His approach to Da Hong Pao is not unlike his personality. Its character is classic, a bit old school with a full roast that dampens the flashy floral notes of the tea, but eventually reveals its depth and richness in the brew.
